Checkside Chats Episode 5

Torrens University SA U16 midfielder Ned Atkinson (centre) is one of three guests on Episode 5 of Checkside Chats.

SANFL’s new fortnightly news podcast, Checkside Chats, is back with Episode 5 featuring two of SA’s brightest young talents.

Torrens University SA U16 midfielder Ned Atkinson, fresh from helping his side win the 2022 AFL National Championship, is joined in the studio by SANFL Media Producer Zac Milbank and his father Brodie, the 1997 Magarey Medallist.

The Atkinsons discuss Ned’s rise from playing in the sand in the U8s to being one of the most prominent midfielders in his age group. Ned reveals he’s not growing a mullet to emulate his dad’s old hairstyle while also detailing why he wears zinc cream across his nose for every game.

Torrens University SA U18 defender Max Michalanney talks about his upbringing with his two brothers, mum Amanda and dad Jim, in Ceduna.

Eligible to be selected by the Crows as a father-son selection after Jim played 211 games for Norwood from 1974 to 1986, Max says he has grown up barrack for Adelaide and would love the opportunity to further himself at West Lakes next year.

The gifted intercept defender began his career as a midfielder but is now naturally reading the play in the back half by chopping off opponents’ passes.
