Primary school footy players from across the State will have the opportunity of a lifetime over AFL Gather Round as part of the SANFL’s first Gather Round Schools Competition.
More than 50 schools will take part in the new four-week competition, kicking off on March 17, with around 300 lucky boys and girls to take centre stage on the turf of either Adelaide Oval or Norwood Oval as curtain raisers to the AFL games over Gather Round on April 12 and 13.
The nine-a-side competitions, open to school students in Years 3 to 6, will be played on Monday afternoons at locations across metropolitan Adelaide, as well as at The Summit, Mount Barker on Wednesdays.
While spots to experience the pre-match on Adelaide Oval or The Parade will be limited to 32 teams, every participant in the competition will receive a ‘money can’t buy’ opportunity to be involved across the Gather Round festival of footy.
SANFL Executive General Manager Football Matt Duldig said the SANFL was thrilled to be able to give participants the chance to be a part of the festival atmosphere of what has become the biggest weekend in footy in this State.
“Thanks to the support of the ground curators at both Adelaide Oval and The Parade, we are very lucky to be able to offer this fabulous opportunity for budding primary school footballers,” Mr Duldig said
“To have the memorable experience of playing on these two world-class venues – and on the most electrifying match days of the AFL season over Gather Round – will be a dream come true for many boys and girls.
“Importantly, this competition is all about getting more school kids outside and being active – and having great fun.”

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Emily Bourke said the new initiative was another benefit of hosting Gather Round to inspire young South Australians to get involved in sport.
“Having the chance to play in front of huge crowds at some of the state’s most iconic venues is a lesson our students will never forget,” Minister Bourke said.
“Gather Round is delivering a lasting legacy for the state, improving access for girls and boys to play the game they love while supporting healthy and active futures.”
Assistant Minister for Junior Sport Participation Rhiannon Pearce added, “We want to see more kids getting off their screens, and out being active in their local communities.”
“This a truly special experience that will leave a lasting impression on those who take to the field this Gather Round.”
Registrations are still open for the Gather Round Schools Competition.
Schools can enter a team for $200, or individual players can register for $50, with every player in the competition to receive a gift pack.
