SANFL & ECH Walking Footy kicks off for another season

By ALICE MOULTON

SANFL & ECH Walking Footy is back for a second term in 2023 – and there is still an opportunity to lace up the sneakers and join in the fun with SA’s latest form of footy.

The six-week season of inclusive and social footy commences this week at Hisense Stadium, home of the West Adelaide Football Club, with the weekly social competition held every Wednesday morning.

First created in partnership with leading retirement living and home care provider ECH in 2019, Walking Footy is a modified six-a-side mixed team game. Played on a 60m x 30m field, there is no running or tackling allowed in the game.

SANFL & ECH Walking Footy co-ordinator Jess Brice said the game is a safe and accessible way for over 50s to get active and socialise with others who share a passion for Aussie Rules footy.

“With a focus on having fun, the rules prohibit running, tackling or bumping so there is an opportunity for everyone to shine and be involved, no matter if you’ve ever played footy before or not,” Jess said.

“After each session, you can look forward to a social catch-up at the Westies Bar & Bistro, where you can connect and unwind with new friends and teammates.”

As well as a friendly round robin competition, basic skills training also is provided each week by SANFL Game Development team members, allowing participants to develop their skills and learn the rules.

ECH Head of Customer Experience Carolyn Dawkins said:

“It is a wonderful way for older South Australians to meet new people, stay connected to their community and get out and enjoy some exercise.”

SANFL & ECH Walking Footy costs just $5 per week. Register to play on the SANFL website here.

"You get to meet different people from all walks of life who share a common interest in football.”
