The sixth season of the SANFL Wheelchair League is set to get underway tonight, with each team hosting a round for the first time since the competition’s inception in 2020.

Central District, Norwood, West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens will feature in nine minor round matches – with the majority of matches played at the Lights Community and Sports Centres – before the season comes to a head with the Grand Final on Friday, August 28.

The Redlegs will host their home round at the ARC Campbelltown on Friday, July 10, with the Eagles following suit at the Parafield Gardens Recreation Centre on Friday, July 24.

Westies will welcome the rest of the competition to the Tim Hughes Stadium in the Repat Health Precinct on Friday, August 7, before the Doggies host their round at the John McVeity Centre on Friday, August 12.

Woodville-West Torrens will be looking to continue its stellar run in the competition, having defeated Norwood to claim the last two premierships.

Paralympian Jay Dohnt – who represented Australia in swimming at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympics – will line up for Central District in this year’s competition.

“I used to play basketball with the captain Shaun Whitbread, and he’s been bugging me for the past six years to play, so I thought I would get back in the chair and help him out this year,” Dohnt said.

“It’s good to be around a group again – it’s a really good group as well out at Central District. It’s nice to be back in a team environment.

“I am super competitive, so hopefully we can get a few wins and have some fun along the way.”
