The SANFL and SA Football Commission congratulate the 10 SANFLW players who have been selected in the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft.

Glenelg defender Poppy Scholz – sister of Matilda, the 2024 AFLW Rising Star with Port Adelaide – became the first SANFL player selected at pick No. 6 by Carlton in the league’s first ever national AFLW draft.

Joining Scholz in the first-round selections was Sturt forward/mid and 2024 SANFLW Powerade Breakthrough Player Award winner India Rasheed, heading to Adelaide with the Crows’ first pick at No. 13.

With a further eight SANFL players having their names called last night, there were double the number of SANFLW stars selected in the draft compared with 2023, including six players to interstate clubs.

SANFL Executive General Manager Football Matt Duldig said that having 10 of the 60 selections in the first open AFLW Draft was a very pleasing result and a reflection of the strength and depth of female talent in South Australia and the Hostplus SANFL Women’s League.

“The Hostplus SANFLW and Development leagues are providing a genuine pathway for female players in South Australia to achieve their dream of getting onto an AFLW list,’’ Duldig said.

“The SANFLW competition is highly valued by AFL Clubs and recruiters across the nation, and those players who aspire to get to a professional level, as a result of the outstanding work being done by our SANFL Clubs.

“Furthermore, we’re extremely proud of SANFL’s reputation of developing many elite young female footballers and the high standards we are setting at a national level with our elite talent development programs.

“We acknowledge the efforts of each of our SANFL Clubs, the players’ grassroots community football clubs and everyone involved in assisting with their development and helping them to realise their dream of playing women’s football at a professional level.”
