In an historical first, next month’s SANFL Statewide Super League Showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide will now be held as a curtain-raiser to the AFL Showdown at Adelaide Oval on Saturday May 8.
This will be the first time a double-header SANFL and AFL Showdown will be played at Adelaide Oval, with the two AFL Clubs’ State League teams previously meeting at several regional venues and Alberton Oval.
The Round 6 SANFL showdown was originally scheduled to be played at Alberton Oval on May 8.
SANFL General Manager Football Matt Duldig said it was logical to shift the SANFL Port Adelaide versus Adelaide match from Alberton to Adelaide Oval as the curtain-raiser to the club’s AFL Showdown home match, proving a great opportunity for Port Adelaide members and supporters of both clubs to experience the two matches at the home of SA footy.
SANFL General Manager Football Matt Duldig''It will be an exciting opportunity for fans of both clubs to watch their budding young stars of the future.''
“It will be an exciting opportunity for fans of both clubs to watch their budding young stars of the future,” Mr Duldig said.
‘’For many of the players, it will also be their first opportunity to play on their club’s AFL home venue, providing them with a valuable experience.
‘’It should build nicely into what is always a highly-anticipated blockbuster between SA’s two AFL clubs.’’
The Round 17 SANFL showdown, to be Adelaide’s home game, will be played on the same weekend as the next Crows home AFL Showdown on August 7-8. Details of this SANFL match will be released closer to the date to align with the rolling AFL fixture.
SANFL can also confirm the start time for the Round 6 game between Central District and Norwood will now be 3.05pm due to it being broadcast live on Channel 7.
