Sturt recruit Charlie Molan has made an instant impression after becoming the first Double Blue in 30 years to win the Reserves Magarey Medal.

Arriving at Unley from VFL club Williamstown at the end of last year, the 20-year-old polled 19 votes to be the first Sturt player to win the Reserves Magarey Medal since Brendan Roberson in 1993.

The flame-haired midfielder, who also played four Hostplus SANFL League matches in his debut campaign, finished ahead of Central District veteran Luke Habel on 16 votes while Glenelg utility Connor McLeod placed third with 15.

Averaging 21 disposals, six tackles and five clearances in 2023, Molan was adjudged best afield by the umpires on four occasions in his 15 outings.

South Adelaide’s Cooper Rogers (14 votes) and Glenelg’s Archie Lovelock (13 votes) rounded out the top five vote-winners.
