SANFL History Exhibition: Public Forums

There is no denying football is part of the culture and fabric of South Australian history and evokes much passion and discussion among lovers of the game.

The SANFL History Exhibition at the State Library of South Australia is therefore providing a unique opportunity to bring SANFL fans together to consider topics of interest today in a series of public forums.

Commencing in SANFL Grand Final week, the forums will be held in the Hetzel Lecture Theatre, Institute Building (Ground Floor). Admission is free, but bookings are essential via the State Library website at www.slsa.sa.gov.auevents or click on the link below.

Forum 1: Wednesday, September 14

“The Rules and their Interpretation”, 12pm – 1pm

Join the discussion about the recent changes to football rules, with particular reference to the interpretations unique to SANFL.

The panel discussion is hosted by John Halbert, MBE, AM – Magarey Medallist, Premiership player and Captain of Sturt, State Player, SANFL Hall of Fame and AFL Hall of Fame.

Members of the panel will be:

  • Shane Harris, SANFL Director of Umpiring
  • Tim Pfeiffer, former SANFL Umpire, SANFL Hall of Fame
  • Martin Mattner, Coach – Sturt Football Club

 

Forum 2: Wednesday, September 21, 12pm – 1pm

“The Future of SANFL Football”

Join the SANFL History Committee in a discussion about the current state of the SANFL football with consideration of the challenges of the future.

The public forum will be hosted by John Halbert, MBE, AM – Magarey Medallist, Premiership player and Captain of Sturt, State Player, SANFL Hall of Fame and AFL Hall of Fame in conversation with Darren Chandler, General Manager of SANFL.

 

Forum 3: Wednesday, September 28, 1pm – 2pm

“SANFL Footy and The Media”

A discussion about the changes in media coverage of SANFL football, from the days of radio through to a “streaming” future.

Join the SANFL History Committee for a public forum hosted by Neil Smith – former Channel 9 Production Manager, member of SANFL History Committee with:

  • Eldon Crouch, former 5AD and Channel 9 Sports
  • Andy Kay, General Manager, 7 Adelaide Head of Olympics and Commonwealth Games
