Alex Spina is a driven man.
Listed at No.49 in the Statewide Super League Top 50, North Adelaide’s new captain bleeds for his beloved Roosters having started his career at Prospect in the underage development squads.
So there was little hesitation when offered the job to take over the captaincy from the retiring Max Thring as Spina is determined to lead from the front under new coach Jacob Surjan.
On a personal note, he is spurred on by missing out on a premiership medal in 2018, having sacrificed his body with a broken collarbone in the preliminary final against Woodville-West Torrens.
But you won’t hear the 24-year-old mention this as his sole focus is on propelling his teammates to greater heights after narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon in 2019.
Spina is one of the most versatile players in the competition, capable of playing in all three sectors of the ground while also performing any specific role handed to him by the senior coach.
Fearless, yet also skillful, the Gaza product is also known for producing the odd unpredictable highlight as evidenced by his high-flying mark from 2016 in the clip below.
Selected by SANFL Media Producer Zac Milbank, the 2020 Statewide Super League Top 50 is being unveiled one player at a time on the League’s website and social media channels.
Form across the 2019 season was used as a significant factor in the selection process, with those winning awards such as best-and-fairests, being selected in State squads and leadership groups also looked upon favourably.
Recruits to the Statewide Super League have also been included, with significant AFL experience another element in deciding the order of players.
