Statewide Super League Top 50 – No.4

By ZAC MILBANK

No one touched the ball more than Sturt’s Sam Colquhoun in the 2019 Statewide Super League minor round.

The super-fit ball magnet moved up the field under new coach Nathan Grima, spending more time in the midfield while racking up 523 disposals at an average of 29.3.

But the most impressive aspect about the 25-year-old’s game has been him posting equally high numbers in other facets such as disposal efficiency (83 per cent) while also ranking fourth in the competition for marks at an average of 7.9 per game.

The former Power defender hasn’t always been known for his defensive prowess but he also proved his penchant for applying pressure by placing fifth in the League for total tackles at an average of just under six a match.

His stunning form was duly recognised with the P.T Morton Medal as the Double Blues’ best-and-fairest while he was also selected on the wing in The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year.

With the addition of South recruit Abe Davis and rising star Tom Lewis into the centre square at Unley this year, Colquhoun should be freed up to continue on his playmaking ways in 2020.

And that is a dangerous proposition for Sturt’s opposition.

Selected by SANFL Media Producer Zac Milbank, the 2020 Statewide Super League Top 50 is being unveiled one player at a time on the League’s website and social media channels.

For incumbent SANFL players, form across the 2019 season was used as a significant factor in the selection process, with selection in The Advertiser Team of the Year, West End State squad, club leadership group and placings in club best-and-fairest weighing heavily.

This is to ensure there is meaningful movement of player rankings between each year’s Top 50 list at the start and end of the season.

Recruits to the Statewide Super League for 2020 have also been included, with significant AFL experience, performance at State League level and their predicted impact proving critical in deciding the order of players.
