SANFL STATEMENT – SA COVID LOCKDOWN

Following today’s State Government announcement of the state-wide lockdown, all training and matches across every level of football in SA remain cancelled until further notice.

This means all SANFL State League competitions, Talent Programs, SANFL Juniors, Auskick, Community Football (senior and junior; metro and regional), SANFL Schools, Wheelchair Football, Inclusive League and SANFL APY League are postponed for at least the next seven days.

Information regarding Round 16 of the SANFL Statewide Super League will be released in due course.

SANFL CEO Darren Chandler said that over the coming days, SANFL would be considering a range of options for the remainder of SANFL season in consultation with participating clubs.

“We will continue to review the situation over the coming days but are fully committed to seeing the season out,” Mr Chandler said.

“There are a number of options as part of our contingency planning, depending on the length of Covid restrictions.

“We have some flexibility to reschedule this weekend’s Round 16 matches across the upcoming split round and there is the possibility of extending the season beyond the current scheduled Grand Final date of September 19 should this be required.”

“Now is the time for everyone involved in footy to do the right thing and adhere to State Government directions so we can get back to training and playing as soon as possible.”

Mr Chandler said SANFL also would continue to assist all affiliated Leagues throughout SA to get their seasons back up and running after the lockdown period.

Consultation will also continue with all participating SANFL Juniors clubs with regards to fixturing for the remainder of the season.

He said the League would be guided by any further directions and health advice from the SA Government and the lifting of restrictions.

“This is a tough time for so many industries, including football, and we encourage everyone in our community to remain vigilant at this time of increased risk in South Australia and follow the advice from SA Health,” he said.

“Now is the time for everyone involved in footy to do the right thing and adhere to State Government directions so we can get back to training and playing as soon as possible.”
