SANFL crowds update

Wednesday, August 4

SANFL is pleased to advise that SA Health has today granted approval for crowds of 50 per cent venue capacity at SANFL matches this weekend.

Under the easing of restrictions, SANFL Clubs will be permitted to operate match days this Saturday, August 7 under their existing Covid Management Plans but with reduced capacity, which is in line with the one person per two sqm density.

SANFL Chief Executive Officer Darren Chandler said this effectively will allow crowds of between 3,000 and 4000, depending on the capacity of each of the four host clubs’ venues – Central District, Glenelg, North Adelaide and West Adelaide.

The SANFL showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide, the curtain raiser to the AFL Showdown at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, will be played with no crowd. The match will be broadcast live and on demand on SANFL Digital Pass, theadvertiser.com.au and radio SEN SA.

Mr Chandler said the decision to allow crowds at SANFL Club venues was welcome news on the back of yesterday’s announcement that up to 1000 spectators would be permitted to attend community football matches in SA this weekend.

He said the League, on behalf of SANFL Clubs, thanked loyal Club Members and supporters for their ongoing patience and understanding as they continue to work through the challenges of safely delivering a full season of football in a Covid environment.

“We’re privileged and thrilled to have footy back being played in South Australia this weekend with spectators, however ensuring the health and safety of participants, volunteers, supporters and the broader community remains paramount,” Mr Chandler said.

In line with State Government directions, masks must be worn at all times by spectators at outdoor sporting events, including SANFL matches, except while eating or drinking.

Mr Chandler said he strongly encouraged everyone in the football community to continue to do the right thing when attending matches this weekend and adhere to the measures put in place by SA Health and SAPOL to allow competitive sport to safely resume.

These include wearing a mask, QR Code (or manual sheet) check ins, social distancing, seated food and beverage consumption and hygiene.

“Everyone attending matches this weekend must play their part in helping to mitigate any risk of transmission of COVID-19 and assist with any requirement for future contact tracing,” he said.

All matches are available live and on demand on SANFL Digital Pass.

  • Spectators at SANFL matches are permitted based on density of 1 person per 2sqm (between 3,000 and 4,000 max depending on stadium capacity)
