The SANFL has strengthened its position as the strongest state-based football league in Australia with a huge increase in people watching the competition on broadcast partner Network Seven.

A season average 25,988 viewers are tuning into the weekly 2022 Hostplus SANFL League  Match of the Round on Channel 7 and 7plus – a 36% increase on the same time last year.

The Round 3 clash between Norwood and Port Adelaide attracted the biggest average audience of 33,595 viewers, followed by the 31,095 viewers who tuned in to see Glenelg edge West Adelaide in Round 9.

Channel 7’s SANFL coverage accounts for an average commercial audience share in Adelaide of 33.5%, up 4.3 share points on the same time last year.

SANFL CEO Darren Chandler said the Seven audience figures were a great result for the 2022 Hostplus SANFL League and were testament to the work in building an exciting competition.

“These figures are a reflection of the strength of the Hostplus SANFL League and growing interest in the competition and local footy,” he said.

“We love seeing crowds at our suburban footy grounds, but we know that there are many fans who can’t make it to the matches, so it’s great to see so many tuning in to the coverage on Seven and 7plus.

“Seven’s broadcast support of the SANFL is crucial in building the profile and health of our league, and keeping people connected to their clubs and the competition.”

Seven Adelaide General Manager Andy Kay said a successful SANFL competition was fundamental to the development of Australia’s most popular sport.

“If you can’t get to the local footy, which is a treat in itself, then we’re delighted to showcase it on Seven and 7plus,” he said.

The SANFL made history this year with the SANFLW Grand Final broadcast for the first time, on Channel 7, attracting an average audience of 18,000 viewers.

Glenelg Football Club and the SANFL featured in an episode of South Aussie with Cosi on Sunday, June 11, which attracted an average 88,000 viewers – the Channel 7 show’s highest ratings for 2022.
