2022 TopSport SANFL Top 50 – 11-15

Find out below where 2022 Ken Farmer Medallist Daniel Menzel lands in the TopSport SANFL Top 50.

The best Hostplus SANFL League performers in 2022 are set to be unveiled through the TopSport SANFL Top 50.

After selecting his Top 50 players pre-season, SANFL Media Producer Zac Milbank has chosen his Top 50 now that the dust has settled on this year’s exciting campaign.

Form across the 2022 season was used as the chief factor in the ranking process, with selection in The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year and West End State team weighing heavily, together with placings in the Magarey Medal, Shearman Medal, Club best-and-fairest awards and strong performances in finals matches.

High rankings in statistics such as total disposals, marks, contested marks, goals, clearances and tackles were also taken into account, along with Champion Data ranking points.

So here they are, after entering the top 20, here are selections 11 to 15.

Stay tuned as the remainder roll out across the SANFL website and social media channels in the coming days.

15 - Will Combe (North Adelaide)

If Will Combe played at another SANFL club, it’s fair to suggest he would be rated as highly as his Magarey Medal-winning brother Campbell outside of Prospect.

Internally, the gifted left-footer is recognised by him claiming the club’s trophy for Most Consistent Player in 2022 while placing fifth in the Barrie Robran Medal count.

Fittingly, his stunning individual campaign was rewarded with a debut selection on a wing in The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year.

14 - James Battersby (Sturt)

No player has earned selection in this year’s The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year more than James Battersby.

Named for the fifth occasion, the ultra-consistent Sturt captain placed third in the P.T. Morton Medal as Sturt’s best-and-fairest.

The 27-year-old clearance-winning warrior finished 7th in the Magarey Medal while averaging 110 Champion Data Ranking Points.

13 - Matthew Wright (Adelaide)

At a time when players should be slowing down, Adelaide skipper Matthew Wright displays no signs of doing such thing.

The 33-year-old was a major factor behind the Crows’ push to a Preliminary Final berth, finishing fourth in the club’s best-and-fairest.

Kicked 28 goals for the minor round while adding a defining five-goal haul in the Qualifying Final to be named as captain of The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year in a forward pocket.

12 - Daniel Menzel (Woodville-West Torrens)

The accolades piled up for Woodville-West Torrens star Daniel Menzel in 2022 as he earned his first Ken Farmer Medal as the competition’s leading goal kicker at the end of the minor round.

Booting a significant haul of 51 goals across 18 games, the oldest Menzel sibling was a lock to be listed at full forward in The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year.

The 31-year-old playmaker also featured in the West End State team while placing sixth in the Eagles’ best-and-fairest count.

11 - Kieran Strachan (Adelaide)

Adelaide’s SANFL Club Champion gave his midfielders plenty of silver service in 2022 as he also made his presence felt around the ground in averaging 134 Champion Data Ranking Points.

Only one player – Norwood’s Harry Boyd – averaged more this season, illustrating the varied areas Strachan contributed in as the Crows played deep into September.

Selected as the resting ruckman on the interchange of The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year, the 27-year-old will be aiming for more exposure at elite level in 2023.
