Woodville-West Torrens finished its 2025 Hostplus SANFL League season in positive fashion with a nail-biting three-point win against North Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

Snapping an eight-game losing streak, the Eagles gave their fans something to cheer about in their last home outing as veteran Nick Hayes helped save the day in the dying seconds.

Leading by less than a goal with less than two minutes to play, the eldest Hayes sibling applied a crunching tackle on Roosters’ debutant Hugh Payze to not only prevent a goal but win the ball back for his team.

From there, the Eagles were able to control the tempo and maintain possession as they banked their seventh win in an injury-ravaged campaign.

Eagles star James Rowe was exceptional with his ball use by foot, racking up 33 disposals, 10 clearances, six marks and a goal while Kobe Mutch worked hard for his 26 disposals.

Intercept marking was a feature of Max Litster’s game as he hauled in a total of 13 marks to go with 26 disposals while fellow defender Lukas Cooke tallied 24 disposals and seven marks.

Wingman Kade Herbert took another positive step forward in his recovery from a neck injury to collect 21 disposals and seven marks while Connor Ballenden did the damage on the scoreboard with 4.2 from 12 disposals and nine marks.

North was unable to chalk up a last gasp win for caretaker coach Sam Mayes despite being right in the hunt all afternoon, winning the inside 50s by a significant 52 to 33.

Midfielders Angus Schumacher (25 disposals, nine clearances), Hughen Wissman (21 disposals, seven marks) and Zavier Maher (19 disposals, one goal) battled hard for the Roosters.

Veteran Mitch Harvey, Nigel Lockyer and Reed van Huisstede all booted two goals each for the visitors.
