2019 AFL State Combine

By ZAC MILBANK

It was a case of the known, and not so well known, putting their names up in lights at Saturday’s AFL State Combine held at Prince Alfred College.

Glenelg premiership midfielder Luke Partington shone in the 20m Sprint and Yo-Yo Test, posting a very swift time of 2.87 seconds in the former event which surpassed the time he set as an 18-year-old testing at the AFL Combine in 2015.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, the 22-year-old said he was pleased to post such strong results given he had spent much of the past three weeks celebrating the Bays’ drought-breaking Statewide Super League Grand Final win against Port Adelaide.

But it was an emerging talent from North Adelaide, Harrison Magor, who slipped under the radar to finish in the top six in four of the five events conducted in front of AFL scouts.

Originally from Port Pirie, Magor clocked an ultra fast time of 2.84 seconds to win the 20m Sprint while showing off his endurance with Level 20.8 in the Yo-Yo Test.

The 18-year-old placed sixth in the Agility Test with a time of 8.13 seconds while also scraping into the top five of the Running Vertical Jump with a leap of 80cm.

It caps off an impressive 2019 campaign for the Roosters midfielder, who won both the McCallum-Tomkins Medal and the U18 Torrens University Cup MVP Award while also performing consistently for SA at the AFL National Championships.

Relative unknown Luke Beecken thrust his name forward with a composed effort of Level 21.5 to hold off Eagles team-mate James Rowe in the Yo-Yo Test.

Beecken also placed fourth in the Agility Test with a time of 8.03 seconds.

Mature-agers Rowe, Tom Hutchesson (Adelaide), Cole Gerloff (Norwood) and Brad Close (Glenelg) all tested well to put their names into the top five in various categories.

And it was a case of the Lochowiak show in the jumping events with older brother Mihail edging out younger sibling Anzac to claim top honours in the Running and Standing Vertical Leap.
