The South Augusta Football Club has been awarded the 2025 Power of Her – Champion Local Club (Regional) Award for exceptional work in supporting its female football programs.
In 2024, the club received funding of $4,500 under the Power of Her Grants program – supported by the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing – to encourage Indigenous females and disadvantaged children into local football.
The grant enabled South Augusta to purchase uniforms, training vests, footballs, mesh bags, agility poles, bump bags and training gear for the female teams.
Fifty pairs of Indigenous-designed shorts – developed by an U14 girl’s player – were purchased through the grant, and a cultural talk was held by two Indigenous North Adelaide SANFLW players.
In 2025, the club had several teams ranging from U11 to U17, with 57 players and six coaches.
South Augusta FC Management Committee member Michael Kerin said it was a “tremendously satisfying reward for the hard work and determination to lift our women’s and girls’ football profile at South Augusta FC.
“The uptake of female football at South Augusta is very important as a means of growing the club membership and boosting our claim to be a welcoming, family-oriented club,” Kerin said.
“We are producing some very talented female footballers, with at least four to date heading onto higher competitions, including SA state sides and North Adelaide SANFLW.”
The Power of Her Awards aim to showcase efforts that empower girls and women to pursue their sporting passions and help create a more equitable environment in sports.
