More than $15K raised for KI Bushfire Fund

South Adelaide and the Southern Stringrays have raised more than $15,000 for the Kangaroo Island Bushfire Recovery Fund after a hugely successful T20 match on Tuesday night.

Cars lined the boundary at the Bice Oval at Christies Beach as the Stingrays held on for an eight-run win against the Panthers in an entertaining game of cricket for an extremely important cause.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, South Chief Executive Neill Sharpe said the club was eager to show its support for its KI family given the Island is a vital region in the Panthers’ country zone.

Sharpe said final funds raised between the Panthers and Stingrays surpassed $15,000 for the Kangaroo Island Mayoral and Relief Recovery Fund.

Batting first, the Stingrays benefited from a 46-run cameo courtesy of club coach and former West Indies star Carl Hooper, who belted five sixes in his eye-catching knock.

Chasing 151 for victory, the Panthers fell short with a total of 8/142 from their 20 overs despite the best efforts of openers Tom Plant (former Redbacks batsman) and South skipper Joel Cross, who ended up retiring to give their team-mates a hit.

Those who attended were generous in donating a gold coin for the Kangaroo Island Mayoral Relief and Recovery Fund upon entry while also bidding enthusiastically on a number of memorabilia items auctioned on the night.

All proceeds – more than $2000 – from the sale of South’s ”hooped” guernseys were donated to the Western Districts Football Club, which had its clubrooms destroyed in the devastating Kangaroo Island fire.
