Unley Oval fence given the go ahead

August 26, 2025

A permanent fence with public openings around Unley Oval has been given the green light by the City of Unley.

Following extensive community consultation and investigation into fence design options, the Council this week voted 9-3 in favour of proceeding with the installation of permanent fencing.

Currently for all SANFL and AFLW ticketed match days at Unley, Sturt Football Club is required to erect costly temporary fencing around the venue.

Club CEO Sue Dewing said it was a terrific outcome for both the club and the community.

“A permanent fence is the final piece to the major facility upgrades that have made Unley Oval a sporting and community hub in Adelaide,” Ms Dewing said.

“Importantly, the fence won’t change access for local residents. It will continue to be the same open, shared space as it has been for many years, with multiple gate entrances only closed for ticketed events.

“We now look forward to working with Council to deliver this exciting project.”

Sturt Football Club has committed an investment of $360,000 towards the fence project and will assist the Council in pursuing grant funding opportunities to cover a shortfall of under $200,000.

SANFL CEO Darren Chandler said he was delighted with the Council’s decision, which would finally see an appropriate design solution which meets the needs of football on match days and the community at all other times.

“This a great outcome for one of our premier SANFL facilities, with the new perimeter fence to greatly enhance the match day amenity at Unley Oval whilst preserving the character of the venue for all of the community,” Mr Chandler said.
