EP football clubs to receive flood relief funding

Football clubs across the Eyre Peninsula which were impacted by the ‘one in 100 year’ floods in January have received a welcome funding boost through the AFL Football Facilities Fund to assist with their recovery.

A total of 24 clubs across four leagues on the EP have each received $2,500, to be used either for the replacement of equipment or to contribute to clubroom repairs after severe flooding hit the region in late January.

SANFL Infrastructure Manager Belinda Marsh said SANFL was pleased to be able to work with the AFL to help provide some much-needed financial assistance to clubs on the EP.

“Not only have the clubs themselves been impacted by flood damage, but communities have lost farmland and equipment, placing significant financial pressure on many families in the region,” Ms Marsh said.

“We hope that this small contribution for these 24 clubs can relieve some of the pressure of running a footy club and help with getting kids and seniors out playing footy again this season over the coming weeks.

“Football clubs are the community hub in EP towns and we have been so proud to hear stories of club members coming together to assist with clean ups on private properties and more broadly in the community.”

Ms Marsh said the Australian Football Facilities Fund provided much-needed support to clubs and leagues across the nation, especially in times of great need.

“Our thoughts also go out to all the communities along the East coast of Australia which have been devasted by the floods in recent weeks and we hope they too will benefit from this type of support available as they rebuild.

“No doubt football and sporting clubs in those regions also have been rallying together to assist communities in such difficult times.”

The 2022 football season on the EP kicks off this weekend with Round One of the Great Flinders Football League, followed by Western Eyre, Port Lincoln and Eastern Eyre on the Anzac weekend.

“The $2500 will help our club immensely to replace some ceiling panels that are water stained.”
