Round 2 Statewide Super Women’s League Weekend Wash-up

North Adelaide held Glenelg at bay to claim a nail-biting five-point win at Hisense Stadium on Saturday.

Coming off a convincing Round 1 win against South, the Roosters seemingly had the game in hand when young star Hannah Ewings gave them a 14-point lead five minutes into the final term.

Despite trailing at every change, the Bays fought hard during the final term to register the next four consecutive scoring shots, including a goal on the run to Lucy Armitage in the 15th minute.

But the reigning premier did enough to hold on to the premiership points as speedy Erica Greet led the way with 19 disposals and six tackles while Kate Case, Talia Radan and Tayla Thorn each had 15.

Ewings collected 14 to go with her 1.2 and five tackles while former Eagle Jaimi Tabb applied a whopping 12 tackles.

Glenelg’s Brooke Tonon had 20 disposals and six marks while Jessica Bates made an impact with 17 possessions, five tackles and one of her team’s two majors for the match.

Bates’ goal, featured in the clip below, was one for the highlight reels after her classy one-handed gather was capped off with a long range finish.

A four-goal second quarter propelled Norwood to a 21-point win against South Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium on Friday night.

After holding the Panthers scoreless in the opening term, the Redlegs then slammed on 4.1 to South’s 1.2 in the defining 17 minutes before half-time.

Norwood received even contributions from Jessica Macolino (17 disposals and five clearances), Emma Clark (15 disposals) and vice-captain Sophie Armitstead (13 possessions and six tackles).

The Redlegs’ 2020 Best First Year player Mattea Breed made the most of her inclusion to tally 13 disposals and a goal while Elizabeth Drake and Jade Halfpenny booted two majors each.

Drake’s second was an eye-catching finish from the pocket, featured below, while Norwood debutant Lana Schwerdt, daughter of former Central and Adelaide wingman Stephen, booted a goal in her first SANFLW game.

South’s Crows-listed ruck Montana McKinnon filled her stats sheet with 19 disposals, six marks and six clearances while leadership group member Nicole Campbell was another shining light with 18 touches, six tackles and four clearances.

A final-quarter finish on the run from Sturt’s Alysha Healy gave her team a two-point win against Central District at Hisense Stadium on Saturday.

Despite trailing for the majority of the match, the Double Blues claimed the lead on the back of Healy’s bouncing goal in the 10th minute of the fourth term.

Healy’s opportunity came as a result of an exceptional smother from Georgia Swan, who ensured the ball was turned over deep inside attacking 50m.

It was enough to give coach Bruce Dawes’ side its first win of the season as rising star Isobel Kuiper (17 disposals and eight tackles) and Uraidla recruit Alisha Gepp (16 disposals and five clearances) played strong roles.

Bulldogs captain Shelby Smith didn’t give an inch while compiling 14 disposals, 11 tackles and five clearances while former Crow Katelyn Rosenzweig booted 1.3 from her 13 possessions.

West Adelaide recorded its second win from as many starts with a 26-point victory against Woodville-West Torrens at Hisense Stadium on Saturday.

Leading by just four points at the first change, the Bloods made their move in the second stanza while booting 4.0 to the Eagles’ 1.0 to open up a comfortable 22-point margin at half-time.

From there, the hosts were in cruise control as former St Kilda VFLW player Louella McCarthy booted her two majors in the final quarter to finish with 12 disposals, six tackles and six clearances.

Zoe Venning was outstanding for West with 25 disposals and five tackles while the Round 1 Powerade Breakthrough Player – Lauren Young – had 18 disposals and six tackles.

AFLW experienced Eagle Renee Forth led the way for her side with 22 touches and seven marks while Amie Blanden collected 14 to go with her goal and three tackles.
