Statewide Super League Top 50 – No.16

By ZAC MILBANK

Glenelg coach Mark Stone didn’t need to look far when he needed to choose a replacement for premiership captain Chris Curran.

There could hardly have been a more clear cut call than elevating Max Proud to be the Bays’ skipper in 2020.

Last year’s vice-captain was a crucial cog in helping the Tigers break their 33-year premiership drought, playing a vital role as a key defender in all 21 matches en route to a third-placing in the club’s best-and-fairest.

Coming off a breakthrough 2018 best-and-fairest award, Proud was also selected to represent the West End State team for the first time in its win against the WAFL in Perth last year.

The Tigers’ resolute No.19 was also rewarded for his consistency with a placing at full back in The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year.

Nearing his 100th Statewide Super League game, it has been a journey of pain and persistence for the 28-year-old who made his League debut way back in Round 5, 2012.

No wonder he will be aiming to cash in during the twilight of his career by adding to a long-awaited premiership medal earned last year.

Selected by SANFL Media Producer Zac Milbank, the 2020 Statewide Super League Top 50 is being unveiled one player at a time on the League’s website and social media channels.

For incumbent SANFL players, form across the 2019 season was used as a significant factor in the selection process, with selection in The Advertiser Team of the Year, West End State squad, club leadership group and placings in club best-and-fairest weighing heavily.

This is to ensure there is meaningful movement of player rankings between each year’s Top 50 list at the start and end of the season.

Recruits to the Statewide Super League for 2020 have also been included, with significant AFL experience, performance at State League level and their predicted impact proving critical in deciding the order of players.
