SANFL’s Talent Pathways team coordinate and deliver football programs across all levels of the game for both males and females.SANFL_Talent_pathways

The team ensures that South Australia offers a rich and fertile ground for talented footballers to grow and develop.

Some of Australia’s best footballers have been developed in the SANFL ranks, including AFL stars Chad Wingard and Brodie Smith, who both progressed through SANFL’s Talent Pathways programs.

The Talented Player Pathways in South Australia crosses several age groups and provide opportunities for both metropolitan and country footballers to develop into elite players for their SANFL Club and beyond.

MEN’S 

SANFL Under 15 Intra State Championships
This championship allows both metropolitan and country players an opportunity to represent their SANFL club in a State competition.


SANFL Under 16 Country Talented Player Squad

Twice a year, in January and April, 32 of the most talented country players in South Australia attend camps where elite coaching and education sessions are held. Players are selected by their SANFL clubs to attend the camps.


SANFL Under 16 State Team

The SANFL McDonald’s Under 16 State Team comprises the best players in the State who are selected to represent South Australia in Division 1 of the National Championships against Western Australia and Victoria Metro and Victoria Country.


SANFL Under 17 Youth Championships

The Under 17 Youth Championship provides talented 17 year-old players the opportunity to represent their local SANFL Club in a State competition. The aim of this championship is to identify players that will be considered for the SANFL Under 18 competition and McDonald’s SA Under 18 team to compete at the AFL National Championships.


SANFL Under 18 Academy

The SANFL McDonald’s Under 18 Academy Squad enables up to 60 of the best young footballers in South Australia to experience elite coaching and education before the start of the SANFL season through a camp held in December.

The program provides the State selection panel the opportunity to assess players in the lead up to announcing the State Squad for the National Carnival, by way of AFL combine testing, internal trial matches and education sessions.


SANFL McDonald’s Under 18 State Team
Selected from SANFL’s Under 18 Academy Squad, the best Under 18 players in the State will compete in the Under 18 AFL National Championships each year. South Australia has consistently had many players drafted to AFL Clubs due to their performances at these championships.

In 2016, a total of 17 SANFL players were selected in the AFL National and Rookie Drafts. This result is testament to the diligent work undertaken by SANFL and its Clubs in identifying and nurturing the State’s young talent.


WOMEN’S

Macca’s Shield
This SANFL competition allows both metropolitan and country players an opportunity to represent their SANFL club in an Under 14 and Under 16 shortened season.


SANFL Under 18 Academy

The SANFL Under 18 Academy Squad enables all age eligible female footballers in South Australia to experience elite coaching and education before the start of the SANFL Women’s season through a number of training sessions held in December through to February.

The program provides the State selection panel the opportunity to assess players in the lead up to announcing the State Squad for the National Carnival, by way of AFL combine testing, internal trial matches and education sessions.


SANFL McDonald’s Under 18 State Team

Selected from the SANFL’s Under 18 Academy Squad, the best under age players in the State will compete in the NAB AFL Women’s Under 18 National Championships each year.

With the introduction of the NAB AFL Women’s League in 2017, the U18 National Championships will begin to play a pivotal role in allowing AFL Clubs to view talent ahead of the AFL Draft.
