Mature-agers and father-sons feature in the 21 South Australians to test at the AFL State Combine to be held at Prince Alfred College on Saturday October 14.

Glenelg’s Dom Barry and Sturt’s Pat Wilson, together with developing ruckmen Jordon Sweet (North) and Jordan West (Eagles) have attracted the interest of AFL scouts ahead of the AFL National and Rookie Drafts.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, SANFL Talent Manager Brenton Phillips said the quartet’s selection proved the Macca’s League can provide a perfect platform for players initially overlooked at elite level.

Barry, from the APY Lands, has been consistently using the ball well off a wing for the Bays while Wilson has blossomed as a big-bodied midfielder for the Double Blues after missing last year’s Macca’s League premiership due to a shoulder injury.

Sweet and West – the nephew of former Norwood and Glenelg key forward Jim West – have made the most of their recent opportunities due to the injuries to first-choice ruckmen at their clubs in James Craig (North) and Marc Borholm (Eagles).

Jackson Edwards, who made his Macca’s League debut for Glenelg in Round 15, and Eagle Jake Weidemann have also received interest, with both of their fathers – Tyson Edwards and Wayne Weidemann – playing at the highest level for Adelaide FC.

Another to make his presence felt at senior level this year has been Sturt’s Mitch Crowden, who has played the most Macca’s League matches this year (nine) of any McDonald’s SA Under-18 players.

Little known Oscar Chapman (North) and Curtis McCarthy (Glenelg) have also found themselves on the list, with the latter the younger brother of Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy.
