Leigh R. Whicker

Many South Australians won’t be able to remember a time when Leigh Whicker was not guiding football here from strength to strength.Leigh Whicker

But from 1963 to 66, Leigh was a player – 43 times for Sturt and kicking 18 goals.

It took an injury to turn his attention to administration, with Leigh becoming General Manager of the Double Blues from 1969 – 1971.

From there he stepped smoothly into the SANFL and was deeply involved – often a prime mover – in almost every major development since then.

The glory years of Football Park; the creation of the Adelaide Crows; the birth of the Power; the redevelopment of the brilliant Adelaide Oval.

Before retiring just last year, Leigh had been SANFL General Manager for three decades.

He was Executive Commissioner of the SA Football Commission for almost as long.

And he spent six years guiding the Adelaide Oval’s Stadium Management Authority as Executive Director.
