BEST SANFL DRAFT HAUL SINCE 2012

SANFL has had its strongest AFL Draft haul since 2012 after a total of 15 players were selected in the annual roll call at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night and Friday afternoon.

Less than 24 hours after SANFL had three players – Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine (Gold Coast) and Connor Rozee (Port Adelaide) – selected inside the top five, another 11 SANFL-bred prospects had their names called by AFL clubs.

This left SA’s State League – which provided 19 per cent of the entire AFL Draft crop – just two shy of the 17 chosen in 2012 and 19 picked in the 1995 super draft, which included five inside the top 10.

Intercepting Central District defender Jez McLennan was quick to join fellow Bulldog in Jackson Hately in being selected at the AFL Draft, when he was snapped up by the Gold Coast Suns at Pick No.23 in the first choice of the second round.

South Adelaide midfielder Tom Sparrow headed east when he was chosen with Pick No.27 by Melbourne, joining fellow South Australians such as Alex Neal-Bullen and Billy Stretch in the red and blue.

SA U18 captain Luke Valente made it seven South Australians picked inside the top 32 selections when he headed across the Nullarbor to Fremantle, with the consistent midfielder delighted to join another Redlegs draftee in Stefan Giro who was rookie-listed by the Dockers last year.

Geelong then raided the Redlegs by picking two Eyre Peninsula boys in succession with the addition of versatile utility Ben Jarvis at No.48 and hard-running midfielder Jacob Kennerley at No.50.

Rebounding defender Aaron Nietschke ensured he was the third Central District product to have his name called when he went at No.53 to join fellow South Aussie Sparrow at Melbourne.

Bulldogs ruckman Darcy Fort landed at the Cattery with pick No.65, before the Cats snared their fourth SANFL player in the form of Panthers goalsneak Jake Tarca at No.68.

North Adelaide premiership forward Robbie Young was the surprise call of the AFL Draft when the mature-age 23-year-old found himself at St Kilda with Pick No.67.

Port Adelaide finished off its AFL Draft campaign by adding two more SA U18 players at the back end, with Sturt key defender Riley Grundy and North premiership livewire Boyd Woodcock landing at Alberton.

Those selected in the past two days are in addition to the four mature-age SANFL players already selected by AFL clubs, including South Adelaide co-captain Keegan Brooksby, who was snapped up by West Coast earlier this week.

Exciting forwards Shane McAdam (Sturt) and Nathan Kreuger (South) were selected by Adelaide and Geelong respectively while West Adelaide swingman Chris Burgess is one of several South Aussies set to play with the Suns in 2019.
