FAB FOUR PICKED IN FIRST ROUND

SANFL has produced its highest AFL Draft crop since 1995 with three Croweaters selected in the top five at Thursday night’s glamour presentation at Marvel Stadium.

With Woodville-West Torrens forward Jack Lukosius and West Adelaide excitement machine Izak Rankine chosen in consecutive picks to Gold Coast at No.2 and No.3, North Adelaide utility Connor Rozee came two choices later at No.5 to the Power.

It was 23 years ago when SANFL last had a trio inside the top five when Port’s Clive Waterhouse was selected at No.1 to Fremantle, Norwood’s Matthew Primus went at No.2 to Fitzroy and North’s Scott Bamford headed at No.4 to the Lions.

After Carlton chose Sam Walsh at No.1, Lukosius became SA’s highest draft pick since the Eagles’ Jimmy Toumpas was selected with Pick No.4 in the 2012 AFL Draft.

Central District midfielder Jackson Hately was the fourth Croweater snared in the first round when he was snapped up by Greater Western Sydney at Pick No.14, leaving Rozee as the only SANFL-bred player to be selected by one of the two SA AFL clubs.

South Australia’s best total haul in the AFL Draft in the Crows/Power era was also in 1995 when 19 were chosen, with Daniel Healy at Pick No.6 and Jared Crouch at Pick No.8 joining Waterhouse, Primus and Bamford in the top 10.

With four mature-age selections – Nathan Kreuger (South to Geelong), Chris Burgess (West to Gold Coast), Keegan Brooksby (South to West Coast) and Shane McAdam (Sturt to Adelaide) already taken, this mark could be surpassed when the rest of the AFL Draft resumes on Friday.
