Sturt midfielder Mitch Crowden has underlined the athletic side to his game by producing an eye-catching allround performance at the AFL State Combine held at Prince Alfred College.

A key ball-winner for the McDonald’s SA Under-18 team this year, Crowden finished in the top five of all of the events conducted in front of recruiters from all 18 AFL clubs.

One of 21 South Australians invited to test at the State Combine, Crowden finished equal first with West’s Josh Smithson in the 20m sprint with a time of just 2.92 seconds while also winning the Standing Vertical Jump with a leap of 81cm.

Crowden’s display capped off an impressive 2017 campaign for the strongly-built 18-year-old, which started with playing the opening nine Macca’s League matches under dual Sturt premiership coach Marty Mattner.

Measuring in at 175cm and 87kg, Crowden – from Meadows FC in the Adelaide Hills – finished his season by playing in two premierships in the space of seven days with the Double Blues’ Reserves and Under-18 teams.

Fellow McDonald’s SA Under-18 on-baller Stefan Giro also shone at the State Combine, producing a gutsy effort to win the gruelling Yo-Yo Test at Level 22.3, just one section below the best result at the National Combine in Melbourne.

Giro – who measures in at 175cm and 72kg – also finished in the top five of the 20m Sprint, Standing Vertical Jump, Agility Test and Running Vertical Jump with the Right Hand.

Redlegs team-mate Brodie Carroll was the surprise packet of the State Combine, winning the Agility Test with the only time to break the eight-second barrier and also earning top-five finishes in every category except the 20m Sprint.

Glenelg’s Dom Barry was the best of the mature-age invitees, finishing equal second in the 20m sprint and second in the Agility Test with a time of 8.06 seconds.
