West Adelaide’s Josh Smithson has capped off an impressive season by winning the 2017 U18 Torrens Uni Cup MVP Award.

Averaging 24 disposals and two goals per game, Smithson is the first Bloods player since Ryan Dijksman in 2012 to win the coveted trophy.

Originally from the Karoonda Football Club, the 18-year-old played a total of 14 U18 Torrens Uni Cup matches this year while also representing South Australia at the Under-18 AFL National Championships.

The goal kicking midfielder earned his Torrens Uni Cup MVP nomination after racking up 33 disposals, 10 clearances and three goals against Glenelg in Round 7.

An apprentice carpenter, Smithson’s ability to hit the scoreboard regularly was also illustrated by him finishing with a total of 31 goals for the season despite spending significant game time in the centre square.

Introduced in 2009, the MVP Award is presented to the best performing player in the Under-18 Torrens Uni Cup Competition.

One player is nominated for the Award each round throughout the home-and-away season, with the overall winner selected by a panel of judges chaired by SANFL Talent Manager Brenton Phillips.
