Woodville-West Torrens has outlasted Sturt to triumph by 14 points on Anzac Day at Peter Motley Oval.

Leading narrowly at every change, the Eagles were rewarded for their clean football in the final term, kicking three goals while keeping the Double Blues to just seven behinds.

With just one point separating last year’s Grand Finalists at three-quarter time, Michael Godden’s men used the ball with greater efficiency in the slippery conditions in front of a healthy crowd of just under 4000.

Ken Farmer Medallist Michael Wundke kicked the first goal of the fourth term when he converted from 45m out, two minutes in.

And by the time best afield Angus Poole and Jarred Allmond sunk majors before the halfway mark of the final stanza, the Eagles looked too strong for the hosts to overcome.

Poole, who revelled in the testing conditions, was a fitting winner of the Bob Quinn Medal as the best player on the ground.

The flame-haired midfielder racked up 22 disposals and 10 tackles to go with his difference-making goal close to full time.

He received solid support from fellow on-ballers Jared Petrenko and James Boyd while Sam Rowland rarely wasted any of his touches.

Former Power veteran Paul Stewart was rock solid in defence for the visitors while key forward Tom Whittlesea made sure he impacted on the scoreboard by scoring half of his goals to the main change.

Now sitting with a concerning 0-3 win-loss record, Sturt traded blows with the Eagles early on when eight goals were kicked during a dry first quarter.

But ultimately a scoring drought from Martin Mattner’s men, from Josh Hone’s goal 22 minutes into the first term until Mark Evans converted 14 minutes into the third, proved decisive.

Impressive utility Pat Wilson – playing his first game of the season after receiving a two-match suspension in the trial match period – collected a team high 22 disposals.

Key defenders Jack Stephens and Fraser Evans did everything in their power to turn the tide, sparking many attacking forays but the Double Blues didn’t have enough quality contributions to win the absorbing contest.
