Experienced SANFL field umpire Leigh Haussen has had his admirable persistence rewarded with elevation to the AFL umpiring list for season 2017.
Haussen, with 165 SANFL League matches under his belt since making his debut in Rd 1 2010, has been on the verge of higher honours after appearing at five of the last six AFL Umpiring Combines.
Speaking on SANFL Radio, the 29-year-old said he was excited to be named as the replacement for retiring field umpire Jordan Bannister.
Currently the SANFL’s Umpiring Recruitment Officer, Haussen will relocate to Melbourne with his partner next month.
His exceptional credentials include winning two Golden Whistle Awards (2012 and 2016) as the SANFL’s best umpire and officiating in six of the last seven SANFL Grand Finals since 2010.
Haussen becomes the fifth South Australian field umpire on the AFL Umpiring list, joining Justin Schmitt, Curtis Deboy, Sam Hay and Craig Fleer.
Overall SA now has 18 representatives at AFL level across all three umpiring disciplines.
