KERNAHAN HEADS HOME FOR LUNCH

Glenelg champion Stephen Kernahan will be the headline speaker at this year’s SANFL 200 Club, Past Players and Officials Lunch to be held at the Adelaide Oval.

Taking place in the Ian McLachlan Room on Friday September 1 from 12.30pm, the annual event is open to all SANFL past players, officials and administrators.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, Kernahan said he was looking forward to reconnecting with many of his former team-mates and rivals while telling plenty of great stories about his illustrious career.

Before heading to Carlton in 1986, Kernahan played 136 games and kicked 290 goals for his beloved Bays, culminating in the 1985 SANFL premiership.

Making his League debut in 1981, he fondly recalled how he originally sported the No.42 guernsey with his great mate Chris McDermott starting his career in the next locker at No.41.

The star forward continues to keep an eye on Glenelg’s fortunes, noting the Tigers were on track to play in the major round of the Macca’s League this year.

The northern end of Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg is now known as the Kernahan End, something he is keen to share with his father Harry and brother David, who also forged strong reputations at Brighton Road.

Appearing for South Australia on 13 occasions, Kernahan booted a record 47 goals in the cherished red guernsey, including 10 against Victoria in 1984 at Football Park.

But one of his most favourite memories was playing alongside Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend Malcolm Blight in 1985 as the Croweaters thumped the Sandgropers by 87 points at Subiaco Oval.
