SANFL Development Officer Danijel Herbut has been selected to coach the World Team at next month’s AFL U16 National Championships on the Gold Coast.
Herbut – who is aligned to the Sturt zone in his role at SANFL – guided the South Australian All-Nations team to the Grand Final of the AFL Diversity Championships in Sydney.
Speaking on SANFL Radio, Herbut said he was looking forward to embracing the opportunity, together with the six Croweaters selected to play under his guidance.
As the SANFL continues to celebrate Multicultural Month throughout June, Herbut spoke of his Croatian heritage and how he didn’t begin playing Australian Football until he was 13 years old.
The World Team will be made up of the best Under-16 players in Australia from Multicultural backgrounds while the Flying Boomerangs will include the best Indigenous players from around the nation.
In a coup for South Australia, the Croweaters’ Kickstart Indigenous coach – Harry Miller – will be at the helm of the Flying Boomerangs, together with four players who have also been selected.
Miller, from the famous Mallee Park Football Club on the Eyre Peninsula, previously played for Port Adelaide in the SANFL and Hawthorn in the AFL.
