McDonald’s SA Under-18 defender Brad McCarthy is looking to replicate his eye-catching form against the Victorian teams in the AFL National Championships during the next week.

The solidly-built left footer collected 22 disposals and seven rebound 50s in SA’s win against the Allies at Adelaide Oval, with the Glenelg teenager looking to repeat the dose against Victoria Metro at Etihad Stadium on Friday.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, McCarthy said he had taken the advice of McDonald’s SA Under-18 coach Brenton Phillips in trying to find more of the ball in defence.

Originally from Lucindale in the south-east, McCarthy grew up with fellow Tiger Darcy Fogarty, often spending time together at each other’s family farm.

Measuring in at 177cm and 83kg, McCarthy said he has watched Fremantle Lachie Neale and Adelaide’s Rory Laird closely in terms of running to the right spots to receive the ball and read the play.

A border at Rostrevor College for four years, McCarthy completed Year 12 last year and is now studying Human Movement at the University of South Australia.

The McDonald’s SA Under-18 team tackles Victoria Metro from 4.10pm SA time on Friday before facing Victoria Country at Simonds Stadium in Geelong from 4.10pm on Wednesday July 5.
